Meet the Captain

Matt Reinem Nantucket Tackle Center Fishing Nantucket

Matt Reinemo was born on Nantucket and started fishing before he can remember. He plied Nantucket’s ponds with his mother and the salt with his father throughout his childhood. When Matt was in his early teens, he began mating for his father, Karsten Reinemo, onboard his charter boat. At age 18 Matt began his career as a full time captain. Fishing out of Straight Wharf’s charter boat row onboard Topspin, Matt learned from some of the best captains on the island. After a few years, the light tackle opportunities of the flats and bonito bar on the west end called, and Matt split time between Straight Wharf and Madaket. In the winter Matt ran sport fishing boats in Miami and Costa Rica, and fished recreationally as much as time and money would allow. In 2013, after thirteen seasons on Straight Wharf, Matt bought his 25’ Parker, the Tight Lines, and moved to Madaket full time, and 2018 was Matt’s 20th season as a charter captain. Matt has written numerous fishing articles and two books, Fishing Nantucket: A Guide for Island Anglers, (2012), and Compass of My Soul, Essays from a Fishing Nut Navigating Family Life, (2014). Matt’s wife, Elizabeth Reinemo, is an English teacher at Nantucket High, and they have two children.

Flats Fishing (4 Hours) SandBar Exam ~ $550

In the spring striped bass cruise the shallows of the west end. This a traditional favorite method of fly fishermen because they can be targeted through sight fishing, only presenting the fly once the fish is seen. However, they can also be targeted with spinning or fly tackle in low light conditions blind casting. Striper fishing is two or three feet of water is hard to beat. While there are fish on the flats all season, spring is best, and I will generally not fish much on the flats after early July. (Two person max)

Half Day (4 hours) Tight Lines ~ $700

The most popular trip- striped bass, bluefish, bonito and false albacore are all accessible in a half day trip. (6 person max, 1-4 is ideal)

Full Day (8+ Hours) ~ $1400

Tuna, marlin and mahi mahi are the likely targets fishing offshore south of the island. The weather conditions must be excellent. (6 person max, 1-4 is ideal)

Have your own boat? ~ $100/hour (4 hour minimum)

Capt. Matt is happy to accompany you on your own boat and show you the prime spots and techniques.
